The State Claim Agency reported that at the end of 2012 they had received 1,792 claims against public hospitals and other HSE facilities. The figure soared to 3,061 claims in 2013.

In 2012 the majority of claims were in regards surgical procedures whereas the lowest number of claims was in the area of mental health.

Over 45% of claims were received by members of the public, with the next largest grouping being HSE staff themselves; representing 15% of all claims.

The State Claims Agency runs the clinical indemnity scheme which manages “all clinical negligence claims taken against healthcare enterprises, hospitals and clinical, nursing and allied healthcare practitioners covered by the scheme”
